From 1920s Plaster to Brand-New Drywall

West University Place is two neighborhoods living on the same streets: original 1920s–40s brick cottages near Rice University, and the new construction that has replaced many of them. Each demands a different kind of wall prep, and we've done plenty of both.

The original cottages have true plaster walls — beautiful, hard, and almost never flat. Before hanging paper we map each wall with a straightedge, fill low spots, and float out humps, because a bold pattern will telegraph every imperfection a casual glance would miss. Old plaster also holds decades of paint layers; we always test adhesion and seal with the right primer so your new paper doesn't pull the history off the wall with it.

West U families call us most for dining rooms, entryways, nurseries, and the powder rooms that guests always comment on. We also work regularly with the interior designers active in the neighborhood, handling delicate materials — grasscloth, hand-printed papers, silk — that only get one chance to go up right.
